Grant at property level, not account level

Analytics has two places to add a user, and they are different screens:

  • Account access management grants access to every property under the account.
  • Property access management grants access to one property only.

Use property access management. We only need the one property in scope. Granting at account level works, but gives us more than the engagement requires, and there is no reason to do that.

Steps

  1. Sign in at analytics.google.com with an account that has Administrator on the property.
  2. Select the correct property from the property selector at the top. Its measurement ID takes the form G-XXXXXXXXXX.
  3. Click Admin, bottom left.
  4. Under the Property column, click Property access management.
  5. Click the plus (+) button, then Add users.
  6. Enter admin@laurenmilligan.pro.
  7. Leave Notify new users by email ticked.
  8. Under Standard roles, select Editor.
  9. Click Add.
Verify it worked

Our email address appears in the property access management list with the role Editor.

Why Editor

GA4 roles run None → Viewer → Analyst → Marketer → Editor → Administrator.

Editor gives full control of property settings: creating and configuring conversion events, custom dimensions, audiences, and the data streams. That is exactly the work in scope.

Editor explicitly cannot manage users. It cannot add anyone, remove anyone, or change anyone's role. User administration stays entirely with you, which is the correct place for it.

One thing to watch: the linking step needs both grants at once

Sequencing

Linking Google Ads to GA4 can only be done by someone holding Editor on the GA4 property and Admin on the Google Ads account at the same time.

This is why both grants belong on the same day rather than spread across a week. If the Analytics grant arrives Wednesday and the Ads grant Friday, the link cannot be made until Friday, and the conversion configuration that depends on it slides with it.

Do not grant access to an old Universal Analytics property

Many accounts still contain a Universal Analytics property, with an ID in the form UA-XXXXXXX-X. Those properties are dead. Google stopped processing Universal Analytics data in 2023, and a UA tag still firing on a live site is usually something worth removing.

If your property list shows both, the one we need is the GA4 property, with a measurement ID beginning G-. Granting access to the UA property instead is a common and easy mistake, and it will look like access was granted when it was not.
