Creating a Google Ads account from scratch

Start the day you learn no account exists, not on signing day
Time required
About 20 minutes, then up to several business days of Google verification

Why the timing matters more than the steps

The steps below are easy. The waiting is not. A brand-new Google Ads account can sit in business or domain verification for several business days, and that is entirely inside Google's process. Nobody can accelerate it, escalate it, or work around it.

A launch date assumes an account that is verified and able to spend. If the account is created the week of launch, verification may not clear in time. Every day this starts earlier is a day of risk removed. If you can start it today, start it today. Nothing here commits you to spending anything.

Before you begin, decide two things that cannot be changed later

Permanent settings

1. Which Google account owns it. Use a company email address that will still exist in three years, and ideally one that is not tied to a single employee. A shared marketing or admin address is better than a personal one. Moving ownership later is possible but tedious.

2. Time zone and currency. You will be asked during setup. Both are permanent. They cannot be changed afterwards on an existing account. The only fix is a new account, which means losing all history. Choose the time zone you actually report in.

Steps

  1. Go to ads.google.com and click Start now. Sign in with the Google account chosen above.
  2. Skip the guided flow. Google will try to walk you into a "Smart campaign," which is its simplified product and is not what a managed engagement is built on. Look for Switch to Expert Mode, or a link reading Create an account without a campaign. Take it. If you find yourself being asked for a business description and a budget, you are in the wrong flow. Back out and look for the Expert Mode link again.
  3. Confirm business information. Billing country, time zone, and currency. Re-read the warning above before clicking through this screen.
  4. Add billing information. Enter your payment method and billing address. Nothing is charged until campaigns run, and campaigns cannot run until we build them and you approve them. Adding billing now is what lets verification begin.
  5. Complete advertiser verification. Google requires this before ads serve. It usually asks for your business name and address matching public records, a payment profile in the same legal entity name, and domain ownership verification. Submit everything in one pass, because a partial submission restarts the clock.
  6. Send us the customer ID. A 10-digit number, formatted 123-456-7890, shown at the top right.
  7. Grant us access. Follow the companion guide, Granting access to your Google Ads account.

What to tell us, and when

Tell us the moment any of the following is true. None of them are bad news on their own. All of them are bad news if we find out late.

  • The account is created and awaiting verification. Tell us the date submitted.
  • Verification has been rejected or is asking for more documents. Tell us the same day.
  • Billing was declined or the payment method needs finance approval. Tell us the same day.
  • You are unsure whether an old account already exists somewhere. Tell us before creating a new one.

That last one matters. Creating a second account when a dormant one already exists means starting with no conversion history and no quality signals, and it is difficult to undo.
